The Power of Lego….

I have three boys – aged 6, 9 & 11. To say they are alike would be false. They are all actually very unique, very different and I’m often amazed at how I think I have raised them the same, yet they are all completely different from one another. Sure, they have their similarities, but they also have their differences. They all have their own interests, and often disagree on what is “cool”. The one thing they all love though is Lego. Their ages are such that they don’t necessarily do things together all the time, but if you put a lego project in front of them, they all gravitate to it and work together to finish it. Last night the three of them sat here at the table, without fighting for longer than an hour {insert miracle here}. It was past their bedtime, and it was a Sunday night but who cares – they weren’t fighting and they were having fun, together. I couldn’t resist taking a few pictures of them and the “power of lego”.

  1. This is so beautiful — and I have to admit it made me tear up a bit, as I just dropped my 12-year-old son off at his dad’s house for two long, grueling weeks…during which time I’ll unlikely get to see him, and yet I pass by the “Lego room” in our home every day, thinking of him sitting there and building his latest creation…

Lovely photos … you’re truly blessed with beautiful children and a talented eye for photos that speak to a mommy’s soul!

    • Memories by Me Photography says:

Awe Mikalee! Thanks so much for your kind words. Hope the two weeks pass by quickly….build him a “welcome back” sign out of lego! ;) Take care…..

  2. I am in my 20s and you can still wrangle my siblings and I together with a lego project.

    • Memories by Me Photography says:

I did the Indiana Jones set with my oldest son about a year ago – it had 1000 pieces or something crazy like that, but I became obsessed with finishing it! haha

  3. 312east5th says:

i have two little boys and i relish the moments they are not fighting as well. so sweet to see what the future may hold! you have a beautiful blog!

    • Memories by Me Photography says:

The future with boys is wonderful! I miss the days when they were smaller though, but so glad I have pictures to look back on of those memories.

  4. When I was little, I played with Lego too. The only difference between me and everybody else is I made a mansion of death traps based on The Beast Of Chicago.
    (Look it up)

  5. Ah, the new Lord of the Rings, the only set with black horses out of the new Lord of the Rings… oh, oh, oh! Ha ha, I had three older brothers (I was the baby sister), now I have four boys, 15, 13, 11 and our latest, 2. They want ALL the new Lord of the Rings Legos. My oldest actually wrote in suggesting they make Lord of the Rings and Narnia Legos :) What is it about Legos that can build the soul and brotherly love? What is it about a group of three boys that gives you a perfect mix of EVERYTHING? Much Love! KL

    • Memories by Me Photography says:

I would LOVE a fourth boy, but alas, not in the cards for me. :( My kids just watched all the Lord of the Rings movies and next thing you know my youngest son got the lego magazine and there they were – LORD OF THE RINGS! All three were so excited. Thank your son for us – if he had anything to do with it – we are grateful! :)

      • I’m sure the great minds at Lego weren’t reliant on my son’s brainstorm… and if so, they should have hurried it up, he wrote that letter nearly four years ago! ;) Thank you for sharing your wonderful family “Lego” memories.

      • There is a website at http://www.lego.cuusoo.com that allows adult fans of Lego, and I suppose adult parents of fans of Lego to suggest new ideas for Lego Themes. The votes are sourced to other fans and if 10,000 votes are received for a project, Lego reviews it for production. So far the only one to sneak through in the states is the new Lego Minecraft theme, but Back To The Future and The Legend of Zelda are currently up for review by Lego. Its a pretty exciting time to be a Lego fan; especially one who is old enough to buy one’s own toys.

  8. Nichole Roszell says:

I think it’s a boy thing. My 3 1/2 yr old loves Lego to and he can sit for hrs playing and building with it. Those pics of them working together will be a memory you will cherish as it probably won’t happen to often again. Lol.

    • Fr. John+ says:

read the story of Frank Lloyd Wright, and his penchant for ‘building.’ It’s a ‘guy thing,’ pure and simple. I remember my cousin and I working for hours on LEGOs when we were younger, and his sister (my cousin) just not ‘getting’ what was so ‘great’ about it all. She ended up playing dolls with the youngest in their family (girl) while the ‘guys’ did LEGOs. Funny thing, the Adult men (my Dad and my uncle) would stop discussing politics in the kitchen, and, from time to time, come and watch the ‘boys’ building……

  12. Legos are a big part of our world, too. Marvelous photos.

  13. This is wonderful! Legos were a staple at my house too. My brother would have his friends over and they would build, build, build their dreams into lego worlds. There were a few vacations where I remember taking plywood along to make ramps in our hotel rooms for the lego mobiles we built along the way too. Viva la legos! :)

  14. If you’re ever in Minneapolis, stop over at “Mall of Americas” to see some massive Lego creations.

  17. Legos are so awesome! I was thinking of getting some for me and my husband. LOL

  18. Curly Bug says:

Your pictures are beautiful! I have two young boys (my older son is turning 5 today actually) and we are just starting to learn the deep power of Lego. I love watching and taking pictures of my boys working together and I really love these pictures at the kitchen table, shirts off (the same in our house!) and such concentration. Capturing a REAL moment is the best way to make it a memory. Thank you for sharing.

This post is perfect… it made me remember the nights I used to spend with my dad building houses out of Lego… and it always amazed me how he managed to build things that weren’t on the instructions book and that looked great in the end… Even if I am in my twenties now, I still manage to find the time to build some things with him… :)

  27. audrakrell says:

Beautiful pictures. I have 3 boys, 19, 16 and 13. The 13 yo is crazy for Legos. Well he was. The past two days have been spent dismantling and packing his sets. He puts instructions and all the pieces in a freezer sized ziplock. So sad to see it all go. I had an amazing graduation present in mind! Maybe he’ll reignite with the Lord of the Rings you’ve written about! Blessings to you and yours.

    • Memories by Me Photography says:

Awe, a Mom to three boys as well….kudos to you! It would be very sad to see the lego go…I dread that day, so for now I will enjoy (or try to) every moment…

  30. We always played with lego, my brother and I, Harry Potter was our choice of set (I had the flying car from the 2nd film) :) Happy memories

That is a lovely set of pictures. I have three daughters and it’s amazing when you capture the moments like that.

  32. So sweet and I say all the time that I cannot understand how I can have identical twin boys and have raised them in the exact moment in time and they still have such unique personalities. I am the mom of three boys too and I wish I could take photos like yours. Lovely, just lovely.

  33. Wow kids playing with Lego’s that is awesome. It’s almost like watching them play outside like the old days but i do wonder if this is set for a bright building future. It just causes me to thinks about that Thor line where Odin says Thor’s hammer can be used to destroy or a tool to build. Either way the imagination of a child is limitless isn’t it? -,o

  35. I had a HUGE Lego collection as a young boy, and had garaged it for years once I’d moved out on my own. A few years ago I sold that collection, along with a few other “toys” from my youth in an effort to clean out the garage and put a few bucks in my pocket. I’m not ashamed to say that I regret selling the Lego’s. Even as an adult they are a perfect way to spend a Sunday evening. You’ve probably just cost me a few dollars, because I think it’s time to replenish my collection…Thanks for sharing this post. AWESOME!!

  36. Absolutely stunning photos. I loved it! Will follow your blog :)

  37. Hey fantastic photos. my 5 year old is a little bit of a star wars lego nut :)

The most amazing tool of joy that I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing as a child.
Castles, fortresses, sub-aqua machines and dream houses were but scratching the surface of the vast possibilities enabled by those small, plastic bricks.
I can only hope that someday I will again experience the immense release of creative joy enabled by lego, combined with my child mind.

    P.s
Stepping on a Lego brick is the worst pain imaginable. Period

  41. Very nice post. My four-year-old nephew is just getting into Lego and it’s making me very proud :)

  42. I always loved creating with my Legos. Glad your boys are having fun with them.

  43. bino32 says:

    Hey,
wow, there are still children who can pass the time by playing with Lego. It’s wonderful to know those little bricks are still spreading joy around the world. How they filled my childhood with so much happiness…
More bricks for your boys :-)

  44. Love your pictures. And I also love Lego. Never had any siblings to share it with, though. Had to build with my dad which was nice and without fighting, too.

  45. That is so sweet. And your photography is beautiful. Your style’s very original. I’m single and no kids, but this makes me imagine my niece and nephew when they will grow up. Thanks for sharing something so moving.

  46. Jackie says:

that is super sweet. I need to try this with my boys too. mine are ages 4,7, and 10. thanks for sharing a piece of your world with us!

  47. Wonderful post. My youngest of three, a boy, recently turned twenty. That event was a time of celebration and thoughtful remembrance of times long past. To the rescue, rides my middle child, a daughter with two of my four grandchildren, ages two and four. It starts all over, with most of the hard work removed, leaving behind only the joy of raising a new flock.

    Congrats on being freshly pressed.

  48. Clark says:

I had a Lego experience last Christmas that I’ve truly come to cherish. My boy, who was 4 at the time, is in love with all things Cars. He loves him some Mater and Lightning and the whole cast. Naturally, coming from a dad who (literally) has millions of Legos in storage in various places in and around our home, he has become fascinated with the Duplos that we’ve supplied for him.
Well, last Christmas, Duplos weren’t doing it for me any more so we got him some Lego Cars sets. Christmas morning he opened them and was all KINDS of excited. We sat there, together, for the better part of two hours putting those sets together. It truly was the second-most memorable moment of any Christmas ever.
    Thanks for sharing your moments…

    • Memories by Me Photography says:

That’s awesome…..I too have sat for hours with my kids building lego. I was determined to build the INdiana Jones set last year….after two days, it was done! And the best part was the time spent with my sons building it.

  49. Karen says:

Love, love, love LEGO and all that it does for children. Great post!

  50. Sarah Harris says:

I love all hands on deck creating! I have two, also very different – boy and a girl – yet they share the love of Legos! However they don’t share their Legos! My son builds forts and battlefields spread across his rug whereas my daughter builds skyscrapers on her table. I like the idea of having them create something together!

  56. Oh and congrats on being freshly pressed!

  57. Very cool! I love memories/stories like this. We just moved to CO a week ago – I’ve got 16 yr old and 22 yr old sons and the 22 yr old is here but flying back to FL for about 6 mos before he moves out. That leaves my 16 yr old here alone (hasn’t met any friends yet). We just got done playing a board game and he said he’ll have to take the legos out and play with them when he’s alone, and my 22 yr old said that they should take them all out and build together.

Legos, blocks, and building… my four-year-old daughter’s favorite activities and my husband’s and my favorite thing to do with her. Your photos are a lovely and honest visual representation of the power of coming together for fun and creative purposes. I love these images.

  61. Your photography is so moving. I loved legos as a kid, but I didn’t get a little sibling till I was ten. When my brother was growing up, he liked legos but he especially LOVED bionicals. I remember building legos and bionicals together, when he was little and chubby- now he towers over me and has to bend over to kiss my cheek. How time flies! Congratulations on a great blog.

  62. Me says:

Great Photo’s… I still have my old lego’s and plan to give them to my kids (when they are old enough not to eat them). Nice Job being *pressed*

  63. there is some big Lego love in our house! they’re everywhere……

  64. anniespickns says:

My son, now 46, loved Legos when he was a kid and now loves them even more as he builds with his sons 11 and 8. His daughter, age 4, has girl Legos so now he gets to enjoy building with those too. I imagine he dreams of the day when he can play Legos with his grand children. And, yes, he has all of his Legos from his childhood. Quite a Lego legacy.

  65. touching :)

  66. This is something I can totally relate too. My son’s first activity when he wakes up is building his Lego Star Wars space center. He’s so crazy about it. I’m his sidekick. Fun and inspiring post.

  67. amazing photography!

  68. I love this! I also love Legos, so I would totally be there with your boys.

Wow, that almost brought a tear to my eye. I loved Lego too as a boy. Now I’m 38, I often wish that I still had my old bricks and special bits. Lego is one a very few enduring genius toys. Hardly a toy, but the building blocks of our imagination. I can’t wait until my two year old son gains the dexterity to fix a tiny yellow head to a flat-chested body. Thanks for the memories.

  85. I completely adore this post.

  86. How lovely! Lego had exactly the same power over me when I was littler.

  87. Our boys would play Legos for hours when they were younger…our older son still has every single Lego he ever collected…and now HIS son has his own collection. Great, creative toy!

    • Memories by Me Photography says:

At Christmas time they often sell the big boxes of it – I got a 1600 piece one for the boys and they have used it a lot. It’s just your “basic” legos in the primary colours. Watch for it at Wal-Mart, etc.

  107. radhiyahh says:

Absolutely love this. Everyday I witness my group of preschool children working together (or individually) to build whatever that’s on their mind. Amazing how legos can actually make them use their planning and problem solving skills even at a young age to create lovely 3D designs. Strongly agree on the “power of lego”. And 2 thumbs up for raising your children wonderfully and the sleek photos! :)

  108. Just DO NOT build a set while sitting on the couch. The void between couch cushions sucks every piece into other dimensions.

Your pictures are amazing and the story is beautiful! Through your story and your pictures, you inspired me. Let me explain….I am a motivational speaker in order to motivate people to change the world into a more positive place. Your pictures give us a window into a peace and a solitude that is very possible with enough positive things going on. Upon reading how your very different boys came together with LEGO, it sparked my memory on how everyone can put aside their difference when a pile of LEGO is in front of them. So i wrote this blog post: http://motivatingforpositivechange.wordpress.com/2012/06/19/bringing-people-together-with-lego/ to inspire people to make positive change with LEGO. Thank you for your help and inspiration!

  114. I am now 20 years old. I still have every piece of LEGO I had when I was that young. I gave it to my little sister. Every time I go to visit we build castles, cities, entire worlds. LEGO is an investment for life.

  117. Oh this is great! I recently delved back into the world Legos myself. Is that an unsual thing for someone in their early 40′s? Judging from all the lego creation blogs…maybe not. Once I got into them again, my brother got a set himself to build with his new step son…then another set and another. They’ve build up some great bonding time between the two of them and it’s all due to Legos.

They’re not just for little kids anymore :-)

    Thank you for this post!

  118. Everybody loves Lego, I would say :) I like how you can see the boys being so concentrated on what they’re doing. Especially the last photograph is well done!

  119. mrsklutz says:

Wow. First of all, your photos are beautiful. Second, you have brought back some precious memories. 121. I did not have a chance to read every single comment to see if anyone pointed this out, but I absolutely love how your photos captured the magic of every colorful Lego in black and white, which is so unexpected! It is like you tapped in to the shadow-side; since they are so bright and vivid and “fun”, but making a project is also so serious and all-encompassing in the moment. And yeah, stepping on them, as you mentioned…that is their incredibly dark side.

Oh what warm memories these photos stirred just now! My son is 22, and Legos played such a role in our lives when he was younger. We had a regulation-size pool table in the middle of our den. He kept the whole table covered with legos, and most of the tile underneath the table was covered. Such a warm-fuzzy remembering him spending hours playing, and using that imagination of his! There is no doubt in my mind, he wouldn’t think twice before digging into a pile of Legos today. Thanks for taking me back! :)

Fabulous blog, great photos & so close to my heart I also have 3 children ages 5, soon to be 9 & soon to be 11. My eldest is a boy & he has ASD & absolutely loves Lego – the girls don’t mind Lego if they manage to get a look in either!

Beautiful, timeless shots of your boys. They look so studious with their lego bricks. Thanks for sharing.

  134. Nothing like boys all sitting together concentrating on something. Love it – and beautiful pictures!

Uniting power of Lego. I am in 20s, and I still remember that when I was a child I was dying to have Lego Belville house and Lego Belville yacht. This, don’t know how to call it,…. toy or constructor is so inspiring and developing the child’s creativity that I would like my children have it :) Lovely and “warm” pictures :)

I’m amazed that they didn’t fight over who got to place the pieces! That’s great. Legos are awesome, timeless, and evidently team building. Great photos. Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

I love Lego! One of my favorite things is to watch my brother (who is 15) and my boyfriend (who’s much older) play Lego together. My boyfriend’s dad still plays with Lego too!

Interesting… As a child, I always thought of Lego time as a more solitary activity. It was an excuse to disappear and practice my budding perfectionist tendencies. Regardless, this brings back fond memories. I’m thinking I should work on having some kids so that I have an excuse to pick some up again. That’s a legitimate reason to procreate, right?
